The Woodworkers of Whittier (WOW) meets the second Thursday of every month at the Whittier Community Center, 7630 Washington Ave., Whittier, CA 90602.
WOW was founded to make toys to be given to disadvantaged kids at Christmas time. In addition, we are here to enable woodworkers to help woodworkers. WOW is a great resource of talent in all areas of woodworking. Members have different passions including scroll sawing, pen turning, bowl turning, wooden vehicles, furniture making. These are just some of the different interests of our members. It doesn’t matter if you are getting started in woodworking or are a seasoned pro. Members are happy to help.. Please ask questions.
You will be getting a monthly newsletter by email (or regular mail, if you do not have email). Here is a rundown on what WOW does during the year:
Regular Membership Meetings
Members meet monthly on the second Thursday of each month at Adventure Park. Meetings usually feature a speaker discussing or demonstrating a woodworking topic, a show-and-tell session where members share projects they’ve made, announcements and resources, and a raffle of tools and/or ancillary woodworking materials.
Steering Committee Meetings
The WOW Steering Committee meets on the Tuesday following the regular membership meeting. Location of the Steering Committee is announced at the regular meeting. All members are welcome to attend.
Building Blocks Project
WOW receives periodic shipments of used wood that is recycled and turned into building blocks for children. Members who are interested can join a team of volunteers at Hathaway Ranch Museum (11901 Florence Avenue, Santa Fe Springs; click for online map). The building block project.is ongoing and the blocks are given to charities for children at Christmas. The 2022 season will be the 18th consecutive year WOW has been distributing the blocks. The team meets Monday mornings from 8:30 to about 11:30 am. Open the gate, drive in, close gate, and make some sawdust!. Call Paul Wilson (562) 968-4162 for more information.
Wooden Toy Cars Project
In November our monthly meeting is devoted to Wheels and Axles. Members bring the toy wooden toy cars they have made in their own home shops during the year. WOW provides the wheels and axles. At this meeting all the cars get a set of wheels and axles as members use glue and hammers to attach the wheels. In early December there is Distribution Day. This is the morning at Hathaway Ranch Museum where all the toy cars and sets of building blocks made during the year are boxed up and distributed to the various local charities.
Annual Potluck Dinner
At the December meeting we have a Christmas-themed potluck dinner for members and their families. Each member is encouraged (but not required) to bring families and 3 or 4 items they have made to be given away during the drawing for door prizes. Members are asked to bring a dish of at least 8 servings. About 40 people attend the potluck and everyone gets at least one door prize in the drawing.
Thank you for joining ,,, we look forward to seeing you at the club meetings.
